Dedicated to Bart, who had the Most Beautiful Tail

"It's very simple. Dogs and cats and other talented animals have tails; their tails, with their thousands of flourishes, provide them with a wonderfully complex language of arabesques, not only for what they think and feel and suffer, but for every mood and vibration in their feeling tone. We have no tails, and since the more lively among us need some form of expression, we make ourselves paintbrushes and pianos and violins..."

Sage - The First Winter Coat

Approaching a year in age and his first winter as an adult dog, Sage's coat has suddenly blossomed. It is SO soft, thick and luxurious. To bad I don't weave!

I think he's gotten a bit darker too.

With the Fall season, comes the dropping of a gazillion acorns from our giant oak tree. Sage has been collecting, and attempting to eat as many as possible, just because he can! That's what is sticking out of his mouth here. I told him to "stay" for the photo so he's just waiting to rush off with his prize.

His fluffy ruff looks like a mane now.

With the additional coat, comes additional brushing. A record-sized pile of undercoat came off today. Pillow stuffing any one?

I find it fascinating that he is even more obviously a merle with his adult coat. Which belies the old-timers tales and/or fears that you can't tell merle in a clear red (i.e. "pink").

Yes, his shading has become much more pronounced as his adult coat has developed. And the photos really don't do it justice. His carmel coloring is really gorgeous! Very rich!

It was really hard to tell at first whether he was a merle, or just darkening at different rates in different areas, but no question now.

I was thinking the same thing, Carolyn... you could always just barely tell he was a blue in "pink" clothes... now you can really tell those patches apart.. his coloring amazes me and I have to actually force myself to remember that he is from a blue to black breeding! :) I can't believe he's almost a year old!!!!!
