Dedicated to Bart, who had the Most Beautiful Tail

"It's very simple. Dogs and cats and other talented animals have tails; their tails, with their thousands of flourishes, provide them with a wonderfully complex language of arabesques, not only for what they think and feel and suffer, but for every mood and vibration in their feeling tone. We have no tails, and since the more lively among us need some form of expression, we make ourselves paintbrushes and pianos and violins..."

Many More Great Birthday Pics! (Thanks Denise!)

Here are some additional photos from the California "Trees" Birthday Celebration last weekend. These were taken by Denise Sponsler. She has a good eye and a nice camera, with a feature that allows you to take a series of shots in quick succession.

As a result, she has some wonderful action shots that string together like a slow-motion picture. Below is one segment of a series in which she captured the Three Brothers, Captain, Fig, and Sage, playing together.

But there are a LOT MORE great pictures!
You can see them all on Trenton's Photo Gallery.

Big Day for Denali & Sage!

Yesterday was a really big day! It started VERY early! Up at 5:30AM and off to Napa, CA for Denali's first-time performance entry in Rally!

Denali has been training for quite awhile, starting with formal obedience. But from the start it was apparent that the pace of the formal obedience was too slow. As well, this is a very social girl. She is much happier when you interact with her. Not being able to talk to her proved a real detriment.

One of our training classmates suggested we try Rally instead. From the very first lesson, Denali was smiling and happy. I looked down to see her sitting next to me, tail vigorously brushing, awaiting the "heel" command...a different dog! This is the performance experience we'd hoped to achieve!

Yesterday morning, Denali was ready to show just how much she's learned!

And, did she ever! First time showing, she earned her first leg, snagging a second place finish in an entry of 9 dogs. It would have been a first place finish, with a score of 98, had her handler (me) not made a silly error!

One of the rally stations requires the dog to come forward to the handler and sit three consecutive times. Denali does this perfectly. But on the final sit, I didn't give her enough time to get her butt all the way down before motioning her to finish and move forward. Given her 5-inch legs, and her generously fluffy pants, I had no idea that she wasn't sitting. From the front, she looked to be fully down. But from the judge's side view, she saw that Denali was not quite there. This meant a ten-point deduction for failure to complete all of the principal parts of the exercise. A big deduction! So...lesson learned for the handler - put a little pause in there before moving on!

Special note of huge thanks to Trenton for coming to watch Denali's Rally debut. Your support meant so much and I really appreciate that you made two trips to the show in one day on our account!

Here's our little qualifier, just after her showing, hanging out with Sage and Elbee, waiting for some friends to show up.

Now for the second part of our day - time to get together with Sage's brothers, Captain and Fig, and their people! Sage was pretty excited to see his brothers. He hasn't seen Cappy and Fig since they were all 10-weeks old. Cappy was showing in conformation at the show too!

And if you think that Sage was excited, here's Cappy, leaning out the car window upon arriving at the show and seeing Sage! Cappy's "sister," Malibu came along for the party.

A handsome boy, Cappy and Sage look very much alike - two merle boys in different-colored suits! Their coat quality is the same. If you don't look down, you're not sure who you're petting, just by touch. They can thank Grandma Phoebe for the texture of that beautiful, soft coat!

Other party guests included Sage's other sister, Elbee. The teeny Pembroke who played Grand Dame of the group at age 11.

After the dog show, Alden was kind enough to host the Birthday Party at the family ranch in Napa. A most spectacular location up in the beautiful hills, the ranch is home to Alden's parents, as well as their pets.

Onc of their two dogs is this little Scottish Terrier, Tartan. He is about the same size as Elbee and appeared to think she was quite special! This picture of him, next to the plaid blanket at his owner's feet, was too precious for Moe to pass up!

Naturally, Denali was there too.

As was Denali's maternal Grandfather, Alden's sweet boy, Dunkey (Duncan). Seeing them together, we don't have to wonder where Denali gets her beautiful face!

We've been related to Alden by dogs for quite a number of years. It was wonderful to see her again, to meet her son, Ian (Fig's Boy), and to see our canine family members together. Officially, the senior member of the group, Duncan is 13 years old now, and just as sweet as I remember!

Of course Cappy's human parents were there. Here's Denise with Malibu. Denise took a lot of great pictures of the dogs playing together, so we'll be looking for them on Trenton's blog soon!

Here's Trenton, with our boy, Sage. If Sage is looking a little tired here, it is because he and Cappy and Fig were running and wrestling non-stop from the time they hit the ground at the ranch. It went on for a good couple of hours and was exhausting just to watch! They had SO much fun together!

They did find time to pause for Birthday Cake however. To commemorate the first year of these three Tree Litter boys, I made them a Meat Cake! Four layers, beef, chicken, talapia (fish), and chicken gizzards, mixed with a variety of about seven different vegetables, topped with liver crumble "frosting." It was a real hit with all of the canine guests, and there was plenty leftover for an after-party food fest the next day.

Of course, the humans all had to play party games. This one was How Many Corgis can you Fit on a Table? Several of us took multiple pictures of this little group, so you're likely to see them appearing on other blogs too! From left to right: Captain, Malibu, Sage, Fig and Duncan.

The group shots were great, each one slightly different.

Our party took place on the back balcony/deck of the ranch house. The views looking out over the Napa Valley were absolutely tremendous. The ranch is located on a little slice of Heaven. Thanks again Alden, this was a perfect way to celebrate the many gifts of the day!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY SAGE! (A year in pictures)

Last Christmas, this was waiting for us
under the Tree!

Well, perhaps not literally, but as of Christmas, we knew that this sweet little boy was about to come and join our family. One of the ten puppies in the "Tree Litter," this little "cream boy," started out as "Bryan," the smallest boy in the bunch!

In memory of our wonderful boy, Bart, who made his journey across The Bridge in the winter of 2008, our Christmas tree ornaments were decorated photographs of Bart's life with us, and all of his canine companions, Kenai, Denali, Elbee, and our about-to-be new little man, Sage.

Here are a couple of our ornaments, and first photographs of Sage. These pictures were taken by Sage's original "mom," Megan. Thanks for so many nice puppy pictures Megan, and for the wonderful job in whelping and caring for this litter. Sage really had three "moms" when he started out and we are very grateful to Megan, Carolyn and Mandy for making it possible for this lovely puppy to find his way to us!

This is one of the very first pictures we ever saw of our new puppy. He's four weeks old here. At this point, we didn't know he was to be the one for us yet, but I was really intrigued by the two "pink puppies" in the litter. I'd never seen a cardigan colored like this. Until Sage and his sister, Iris, came along, there was no way of knowing that both parents, Hannah and Wally carried the red recessive gene required to produce the "red dilute" coloration.

As a member of the Tree-themed litter, Sage's tree is the Redwood. In keeping with his clear red coloring and with the awesome splendor of these trees, it seemed fitting.

Sage's registered name is "Starry Nights, C-Myste, Baledwr Redwood Sunrise." This gorgeous picture of a sunrise along the California redwood coast provided inspiration and signifies the new beginning of this puppy's life.

The call name, "Sage," speaks to the fact that the redwood tree lives for centuries and is truly the wise old sage of the forest. The name also honors the paws he fills as the new man in the household. Bart was our pack leader, and was an "old soul." He was a most amazing dog who could communicate with just a look. He possessed a great depth of spirit and much wisdom. Truly he was a powerful creature on many levels; a very wise sage.

This was one of Sage's ornament pictures, seen above. Here he is six weeks old.

When Sage was born, he was a little white puppy. Obviously, this was pretty unexpected. I later learned from Megan that she was a bit panicky when Sage came out. He was puppy #2 of the ten and when she saw him she was concerned that Hannah had perhaps had too many good times with more than one suitor! Yikes...do we have a corgi mix here? She called Carolyn, who clarified the matter...whew! You can see here, and below, just how light he was! Follow along, as that will be changing!

Sage was also one of the smaller puppies in the litter. You can already see here that the blue male (Captain?) is noticeably larger, even though they're still very young. Special thanks to Megan and Josh for the hand feedings that kept Sage going. He was tiny, and the beginning was a little rocky! Today, Sage remains the smallest male in the litter, from all information I have. He weighs in around 27-28 pounds.

This was an exciting day. On December 29, 2008, we made the road trip, between major rain/snow storms, from the San Francisco Bay area up to Carolyn's place in southern Oregon to get our new boy. This is me, with sweet Sage, not long before our departure for home. People who saw this picture were convinced that we didn't get a corgi, but had somehow been fooled into taking this little cream spaniel-looking dog!

Of course Grandma Carolyn had to have a last snuggle with this little round-bellied fellow. She crafted his lovely duct tape crown for him to wear home.

Small in size, but big in personality, this puppy's playful nature comes through in pictures!

Our first day home with our new "son." His expressive personality was quite evident right from the start.

New Years Day, 2009. Yes, he is making noise!

Still a big puppy herself in so many ways, Denali (age 5) was thrilled to have a new little brother to play with. The adoration was mutual. Denali, who can be somewhat discriminating as to who she accepts as a playmate, showed herself to be a tolerant, gentle and nurturing big sister to Sage. He's learned a lot from her.

Now he's about 5 months old and starting to look more like a little dog than a guinea piglet! Tape off, ears up - beautiful!

Check out that big yawn, and the missing teeth! Sage left a lot of his puppy teeth just laying around the house for me to find.

Denali never left any puppy teeth around, but Sage didn't like swallowing his and I'd find them just laying around all over the place! Quite a collection!

One if his favorite spots, at the base of my desk chair. When he was really tiny, he could curl up between the spokes of the base.

As he got bigger, that wasn't quite as easy to do!

At a point it looks downright uncomfortable, but it doesn't change his plans.

From day one, he has loved all of the toys. Formerly all toys were Denali's official property. Fortunately, she has been surprisingly good about sharing.

This toy was a prize, awarded in puppy kindergarten class for being the only puppy who could stand/stay for an extended period while his owner walked circles around him!

Where's the "white" puppy! Sage's pink merle markings gradually darkened. Initially it was hard to tell if he was really a merle, or not!

Oh, there's that smile...we see it a lot! He is a goofy little character - always happy!

OK, now he definitely doesn't fit between the spokes of that chair, but he hasn't figured it out yet! This was taken yesterday, his last official day as a puppy.

Isn't he a handsome boy? He really looks like a young man now. But that sweet, snuggly puppy is still inside!

Interestingly he's started to curl his paw like this when he lays down. No, it isn't injured, it is just a posture he's started to exhibit. I've never seen a cardi do this, but Bart did it all the time - it was kind of a signature posture (see the picture at the top of the page). Of course it is a coincidence, now that Sage is truly the canine Man of the Household! (Or is it?)

HAPPY BIRTHDAY
TO ALL TEN TREE-LITTER PUPPIES!

Make yourself at Home!

Yesterday was Moe's birthday. As a relatively newly-diagnosed celiac, who can't eat any baked goods that actually taste good anymore, my love of baking has dwindled since I was diagnosed about two years ago. This is a real downer for Moe, so last night he got homemade cookies, fresh from the oven, for his birthday. I got to smell them...sigh!

All of this baking activity was new for Sage too. At first he thought for sure that the cookies must be for him. After all...every time he sees me cooking, it generally is for him! (Moe cooks, i bake.)

Needless to say, we were up late, opening presents, smelling cookies, etc. By the time we were ready for bed we found that a very tired puppy had beaten us to it!

This is the sight that greeted us.

He was so completely out that he didn't wake up, or even stir, when I took these photos. And yes, he has made clear that he prefers the same sleeping spot that Bart did, right here on the people bed! He is the proverbial warm puppy...a great little snuggler!

Sleep tight Sage! Only one more day to be an official "puppy."
That year went fast!

Remembering Kenai

Today would have been Kenai's 12th birthday. A few months before her fifth birthday, we lost her to a freak accident when a power line mysteriously separated from its connection at the pole and the broken end fell into our yard.

She was the First Cardigan Welsh Corgi ever to join our family. She was a spunky, vibrant, joyful creature. Always smiling, always running, always a character. And always, we will miss her!

Bart and Kenai, constant companions.

Kenai was a show puppy, for a nanosecond. She was just "too gregarious for the ring," said Carolyn! Little did we know what that really meant until Kenai came home! "Busy" was her middle name. How could she have been anything but, as a "No No" daughter!

Although she was light on coat, her coloring more than made up for it. Beautiful Kenai, a most delightful spirit! We miss you, we'll love you always!
